Six Years Dreaming is a 20 minute piece of music that was written to accompany a Modern Dance choreographed for San Francisco based dance company Gretchen Garnett & Dancers. It is a concept piece that was written to represent a night of dreaming. I was given a lot of freedom by the choreographer to develop my own ideas, based around the timings and movements of the dancers.

The piece begins with a clock ticking, and a low dark drone. This drone and ticking clock will be a recurring theme throughout the piece. It represents the state of being between asleep and awake. As the piece progresses, certain elements (SFX) are added to that in-between state, crossing over from reality to the dreams.

When the music comes in, the viewer/listener enters a new dream. I try to have some recurring musical themes, but also wanted to create different feels and environments for each dream and section of the dance. So, for the most part, there are a lot of different ideas/dreams. My aim was to evoke a variety of emotions to take the listener through a journey. But, as we often experience recurring dreams during the course of a night’s sleep, the dream you start in, you also end in.
